Hi guys, welcome to our Website! Today, we’re going to explain the top 10 most expensive pencil in the world. The way I arrived at the prices was by averaging them out. I did about 1 day worth of research for this article, taking four or five different prices and averaging them for each set. So, the prices you see might be a bit higher or lower on the internet. If you haven’t figured it out yet, buying pencil sets requires you to shop around.
There was over a $100 difference between the highest and lowest prices I found on the internet, and Amazon isn’t necessarily the cheapest place. Some places had really low prices. I checked Blick, Amazon, Jerry’s Artarama, and eBay, and believe it or not, Mercari had some of the best prices out there.
So, when looking at these sets, make sure to shop around. That’s why I provided the median price to give you a starting point. Prices will be higher and lower.

List 10 Most Expensive Pencil in the World
#10: The Caran d’Ache Pablo Wood Set
- Average Price: $306
- Materials: High-quality wood case, gold and dark brown finish
- Quality: Excellent for watercolor, but the wood case doesn’t add much value over the metal tin
This is a beautiful set of pencils. As you can see, they’re really nice, although not my favorite. They work really well with watercolor. The wood case is nice, but honestly, it’s no big deal to me. The average price is $306 for this case. The pencils alone cost about $185, so the set is roughly double the price. The wood case is finished nicely with gold and dark brown, but you’ll see much nicer designs later in this article.
It’s just a box with three pull-out trays, the same design as the metal tin. For the price, the metal tin is just as functional. I want the wood box to be an improvement upon the regular metal tins that come with colored pencils. So, I give this a thumbs down. The pencils are really good at $185, but the box isn’t worth the extra cost.
#9: The Polychromos 120 Set in the Wood Case
- Average Price: $339.95
- Materials: Wood case with brushed nickel handle
- Quality: Stylish design, two-tier system for easy access to pencils
This set is beautiful and decently priced. The average price for a Polychromos set runs around $169, and this set with the wood case costs $339.95, about double the price. The wood case has a nice design, with a smooth and sleek carrying handle made of brushed nickel. It has a unique marking system that I found stylish. When you open the set, it reveals two tiers, allowing you to see all the pencils at once. This saves space and makes it more likely you’ll use more pencils and colors. I give this two thumbs up; it’s a good price for what you’re getting.
#8: The Faber-Castell Art & Graphic Collection
- Average Price: $349
- Materials: High-quality wood case with secure locking mechanism
- Quality: Includes a variety of art supplies, refillable, great value
Here is where the packaging really shines. It appears to be of very good quality. The upper drawer lifts and stays up so you can see what’s underneath and on top. The sides pull out, providing extensions for other supplies. When closed and locked, the mechanism secures the side drawers, preventing spills. The average price is $349, and without the case, it’s around $218.
For under $150, you get a case that will keep your supplies intact probably forever. This collection features 36 Polychromos, 36 Albrecht Durer watercolors, 36 Polychromos art pastels, graphic pencils, blenders, erasers, sharpeners, and a paintbrush for the watercolors. These supplies can be refilled, making it a good value.
#7: The Caran d’Ache Luminance Pencil Set
- Average Price: $438
- Materials: Wood box with three pull-out trays
- Quality: Pencils are excellent, but the wood box doesn’t justify the high price
This set has 76 pencils in a wood box with three pull-out trays. The average price is $438. The pencils alone cost $182. The wood box doesn’t enhance the set much more than the tin would, so the $438 price tag isn’t justified. I wouldn’t recommend spending the extra money on the box. Do you know what the oldest language in the world is?
#6: The Holbein 150 in the Wooden Case
- Average Price: $439
- Materials: Beautifully designed wood case
- Quality: Rich, vibrant pigments, but hard to restock in the US
If you’ve never drawn with Holbein, you’ve missed out on one of the greatest drawing experiences ever. The pencil is both wax and oil, creamy and holds its shape like Polychromos. The pigments are rich, beautiful, and vibrant. However, they are pricey because they are no longer imported into the United States.
You might find a few sets online, but you’ll pay big bucks. This set averages $439, and in the cardboard box, it’s about $354. The wood box costs an extra $100, which might be worth it for the beautiful design. However, once you run out of a pencil, you can’t restock easily.
#5: The Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle Pencils
- Average Price: $399.98
- Materials: Wood box
- Quality: Pencils are great, but the wood box doesn’t add much value
This set averages $399.98 but can go up to $500. Without the case, the average price is $209. The wood box doesn’t enhance the experience much, so I’d recommend buying just the pencils for $209.
#4: The Caran d’Ache Supracolor and Pablo Wooden Box
- Average Price: $463
- Materials: California cedar wood box
- Quality: High-quality pigments, but the wood box is expensive
This set has 160 pencils: 80 Pablo and 80 Supracolor. The box is made of California cedar. Caran d’Ache is known for high-quality pigments and lightfast ratings. The average price is $463, and without the case, it’s $309. You have to decide if the cedar case is worth an extra $172. Personally, I wouldn’t pay that much for a wood box.
#3: The Derwent Fine Arts Pencil and Accessories
- Average Price: $700
- Materials: Limited edition box with various accessories
- Quality: Not appealing in design, more like a tourist shop item
This limited edition box has 165 pencils, but the description doesn’t specify which ones. It costs nearly $700 and includes a couple of Matchbox cars, a vintage metal sign, and UK floral emblem coasters. It seems more like a tourist shop item. The box color is not appealing; I would have preferred cherry wood or mahogany for that price. I give this a thumbs down.
#2: The Louis Vuitton Pencil Carrier
- Average Price: $1000
- Materials: Louis Vuitton case
- Quality: Pencils are similar to Prismacolor, mainly paying for the brand
This set costs $950 plus tax and shipping, bringing the total above $1000. It’s only sold on the Louis Vuitton site and has 40 pencils. Reviews suggest these pencils are no better than Prismacolor, so you’re mainly paying for the Louis Vuitton case.
For $1000, you could get a much better pencil set. This set is for those who want to show off rather than create art. I would recommend buying a $300 pencil set and donating $600 to charity instead.
#1: The Karl Box- Average Price: $2850
- Materials: Sleek black box with 12 tiers
- Quality: Contains a wide variety of high-end art supplies, worth considering for serious artists
This set is gorgeous and practical, almost justifying the high price. The Karl Box was a collaboration between Karl Lagerfeld and Faber-Castell and is a limited edition. It contains 350 art supplies, including 120 Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils, 60 Polychromos, 60 Pitt artist brush pens, 13 Pitt fineliners, 3 Pitt metallic artist pens, 12 Castell 9000 graphic pencils, 5 Castell 9000 jumbo graphic pencils, 5 Graphite Aquarelle pencils, 4 Pitt graphite crayons, a watercolor brush, sharpeners, erasers, a sharpening knife, a sanding block, and a click-and-go water pot.
The sleek black box with 12 tiers of supplies is both a stationary piece and portable. The price is $2850. The box alone is worth about $1850, and the supplies add up to around $1000. Despite the high cost, it’s magnificent and worth considering if you want a high-end, organized art supply box.
